Review: Havukrunuu – Travastland LP

Put on your chainmail, sharpen your sword, and grab your shield because Havukrunuu has released a new album. The Finns return after their 2020 album Uinuos Syömein Sita with Travastland, released on the impressive Finnish label Svart Records.

In the winter of 1236-1237, the people of Travastland rose up against the Kingdom of Sweden and the Catholic Church in what became known as the Häme Rebellion. This was followed by a Swedish crusade against the population, which they ultimately lost.

With a subject like this, you can absolutely start slinging mud—and that’s exactly what they do. After a short introduction by a narrator in Finnish (my Finnish is a bit rusty, so I assume it’s about the Tavastian uprising), the onslaught erupts in full force.

Beyond the highly convincing production, the songwriting is also top-notch. Thick, crushing walls of guitars combined with keyboards, choirs, and the sharp vocals of singer Stefa make this an outstanding album.

With comparisons to their Finnish counterparts like Moonsorrow and Häive, you know exactly what to expect. Highlights such as UnissakävijäYönsynty, and the title track Travastlandensure that this album never loses momentum.

With Travastland, Havukrunuu has already delivered a contender for the year-end lists in February. The Pagan/Folk Metal scene will have to work hard to top this one.
