Review: Taär – Catharsis Till Dawn LP

Take a slice of the Swiss mountains and mix it with the ancient spirit of Greek culture—blend that together and you’ve got Taär. This band draws its essence from two very different worlds: Switzerland and Greece, the home bases of its members. Formed in 2021, Taär is a mysterious entity—virtually no trace of them can be found on our beloved Metal Archives, making their existence feel almost mythological.

So, what do these guys bring to the table? A ferocious storm of 90s-inspired War/Black Metal. Razor-sharp riffs cut through the mix like shrapnel, endless blast beats drive everything forward with relentless intensity, and the vocals are a throat-ripping howl straight from the abyss. It’s instant sonic warfare—raw, unpolished, and utterly uncompromising. Listening to Taär feels like being thrown straight back into the glory days of the 1990s, when Black Metal was all about chaos, aggression, and atmosphere, before everything got too clean and calculated.

This is the kind of band that Soulseller Records—the ever-discerning Dutch label—has a talent for sniffing out and signing. They’ve got a knack for finding bands that don’t just emulate the past, but truly live it, and Taär fits that mold perfectly. Expect nothing less than pure, unfiltered madness from this outfit. The underground just got a bit more dangerous.

With rippers like The Storm of War and At Depths of DamnationTaär hits my nostalgic 90s nerve dead on, transporting me right back to a time when the scene felt raw, dangerous, and alive. There’s a genuine fury and aggression in the way they perform—nothing feels forced or calculated. It’s that honesty, that visceral energy, that makes their sound hit so hard.

Stylistically, their roots seem most firmly planted in the Swedish Black Metal scene of the era—think early MardukSetherial, or Sacramentum—but with a distinct twist that betrays their dual heritage. You can hear that cold, mountainous Swiss precision clashing beautifully with the ancient, mystical aura often found in Greek Black Metal. It’s this blend that gives Taär their own identity amidst the chaos, even while proudly worshipping at the altar of the 90s underground.
