The Finnish duo Tyhjä — meaning empty — released their debut EP in 2017 and have steadily carved out their place in the underground scene ever since. With this new release — their third full-length album — they continue their path of uncompromising Black Metal with unwavering conviction.
The band’s roots go back to Republic of Desire, a long-defunct project that fused experimental metal, industrial, and drum ’n’ bass. But that era is well over fourteen years behind them. These days, Tyhjä opts for a much more direct approach: raw, unrelenting Black Metal, heavily rooted in the second wave and unmistakably influenced by the sound of the ’90s.
The tracks are fast, fierce, and drenched in a piercing guitar tone that blends perfectly with the rough, unpolished production. There are no frills, no gloss — just pure intensity. As always, the lyrics are delivered in Finnish — a deliberate choice that enhances the band’s authenticity. English isn’t their native language, and they prefer to keep it that way.
The album was written between 2022 and 2024, and recorded during 2024/2025. One of the first things that stands out is the striking cover artwork by Lasse Alander. Once active as Tyhjä’s guitarist and vocalist, Alander now focuses on his experimental noise project Cardinal Noire. His visual contribution adds a layer of atmospheric depth that perfectly mirrors the sonic assault within.
There are definitely highlights worth mentioning, with the dramatic “Surun Silpomaa Maailma” standing out in particular — a track that gradually shifts from a cold, menacing atmosphere into a compelling mid-tempo groove. Here, Tyhjä proves they’re not just about speed, but also know how to build tension and dynamics. Another standout is the slightly thrashier “Olento Herää”, with its aggressive riffing and gripping energy that adds a different flavor without disrupting the album’s cohesion.
Moments like these make this a truly intriguing listen. One can only hope that the right labels take notice and give this release the physical format it deserves. For now, it remains available only digitally via Bandcamp and various streaming platforms — a shame, as this work certainly warrants a tangible release, whether on vinyl, CD, or cassette.
With this release, Tyhjä once again proves they make no compromises. This is Black Metal in its purest, most unforgiving form — dark, raw, and absolutely convincing.
