Mors Mecum Ambulat – Death Walks with Me is the title of the new album by the Swedish band Yritys, founded in 2019 in Stockholm by Nihil and Ukko. In 2022, they made a strong impression with their debut Delussion(s), a record that already hinted at the band’s fearless exploration of the darkest corners of the human psyche. But with this new work, they elevate their vision to an entirely new level.
Where many DSBM bands remain stuck in the clichés of misery and melancholy, Mors Mecum Ambulat digs deeper — much deeper. This isn’t just an album that evokes sadness; it’s a cry for help, an auditory portrayal of the internal struggle against depression, dissociation, and psychological collapse. The band creates an atmosphere that not only gets under your skin but latches on and refuses to let go. At times, it feels as though you’re witnessing a personal crisis, an open wound laid bare in the rawest and most honest way.
From the bone-chilling opener Conjuring of Death, it’s clear that this is no ordinary DSBM act. Nihil’s hopeless-sounding vocals — somewhere between a scream and a sob — cut through the mix with brutal clarity. Meanwhile, melodic yet desolate guitar work builds an atmosphere that is both intense and haunting. Ukko’s drums pound like the heartbeat of a panic attack — relentless, ominous, and utterly unforgiving.
The fragile piano passages in Decay, intertwined with pounding drums and desolate vocals, make this perhaps the most emotionally striking track on the album. Few songs so vividly convey the inner turmoil that drives the members of Yritys. Decay is a reflection of the slow disintegration of what society deems “normal” — the unspoken standards one is expected to live up to. But when you don’t fit into that mold, you’re cast adrift, spiraling downward into a darkness that’s nearly impossible to escape. This track isn’t just a piece of music — it’s an experience, a raw confrontation with the collapse of mental stability.
The production throughout Mors Mecum Ambulat is also remarkably well executed. Everything is clearly defined without sounding sterile or overproduced. There’s a natural balance that allows every layer — from the eerie melodies to the visceral screams — to breathe, yet the overall atmosphere remains oppressively intense. Yritys has crafted a soundscape that grips you and doesn’t let go. This isn’t background music; it demands full immersion.
A standout moment is Cloven Tongues, where the band briefly drifts toward Post-Black Metal, with subtle touches of atmospheric elements. Yet they never lose sight of their core sound. Instead, they expand upon it — demonstrating a willingness to experiment without compromising their identity. The transitions between ghostly textures and pummeling riffs are seamless, showcasing a sense of musical control and vision that sets them apart.
Interestingly, while all track titles are in English, the lyrics themselves are performed in Swedish — a deliberate and effective choice. After all, one’s innermost emotions are best expressed in the mother tongue, with all its nuances and weight. The Swedish language adds an extra layer of coldness and distance that suits the album’s atmosphere perfectly — stark, unflinching, and deeply personal.
With Mors Mecum Ambulat, Yritys delivers a record that not only stands out within the DSBM genre, but also resonates far beyond it. This isn’t an album for casual listening — it’s for those who are willing to feel, to fall, to confront. And perhaps, in some small way, to understand.
