Nearly three years after their second album, the gentlemen of Mourir from Toulouse finally return with a new EP—and what a return it is.
Their distinctive brand of Black Metal, which can be described as both experimental and chaotic, drags you into a deep abyss, one that is nearly impossible to climb out of. Walls of guitar violence, combined with noise, drones, and experimental sounds, are backed by frantic drumming—perfect material for a party.
The Carnyx introduced in the experimental Punitive struck fear into Roman legions 2000 years ago, and when you hear it in this context, you’ll understand why. The track ends with what sounds like an alarm clock, as if waking you from the nightmare of an ancient battlefield.
The following track, Nemesis, initially presents itself as a fairly conventional Atmospheric Black Metal piece—or at least that’s what they want you to believe. Hidden within the layers of guitar fury are subtle drones, glitches, and sounds that reach out, pull you in, and drag you back down.
Closing track Illusions is a 6:30-long drone/ambient piece, something that has become increasingly common in Black Metal-related releases these days—even entire albums, as seen with Fluisteraars.
An unusual but intriguing record—not for everyone, I can imagine, but I can certainly appreciate it. Released as a 12” by Germany’s Pelagic Records.
