We live in a time with few mysteries. When I grew up in the late ‘80s, they still existed, but with the rise of the internet, most of them vanished. Nowadays, there’s little you can’t explain within a few mouse clicks.
The Belgian Black Metal project Leegte still carries a certain sense of mystery. Founded in 2019 by Tim Wille, the project has since released a demo and two EPs, the latest being “Finis.” And that’s about all the information I could find. The question now is whether Finis will also be the project’s final release, given that the title translates to “The End” or “The Grand Finale.”
The first thing that stands out about this four-track EP is the production, which has significantly improved compared to the previous “Abandon” EP from 2019. The sound is much clearer, and compositionally, a lot has changed over the past six years. The tracks feel far more mature, with a strong attention to detail. Musically, this could be classified as Atmospheric Black Metal, as the atmosphere is undeniably present.
The deeply buried vocals, with their gnawing wails, create an unsettling mood that only enhances the music. Like a tormented soul trying to tear itself free from purgatory, they cut through the layers of guitar-driven chaos.
What Tim is actually singing about remains a mystery, as the track titles go no further than I through IV, leaving me wondering whether lyrics even exist.
With “Finis,” Leegte delivers an excellent EP that captivates me with its dynamics and sound. I sincerely hope this isn’t the end, but rather a prelude to a full-length album.
