Review: Nachash – Eschaton Magicks LP

The last time we heard from Norwegian Nachash was on their 2018 album “Phantasmal Trinity.” That said, this trio has kept themselves busy with various other bands—standing on one leg just isn’t an option.

Now, after seven years, they return with a new album under the Portuguese label Signal Rex, which has been putting out killer releases since 2007. Interestingly, two of these new tracks were already featured on a demo released two years ago.

While Nachash is often categorized as a Black Metal band, they lean much more toward Death/Black Metal, with a strong Death Metal presence throughout. On top of that, I hear plenty of Heavy Metal and Punk influences, particularly in tracks like “Sojourner of the Dark Passage,” which has definite Celtic Frost vibes.

Where most Death Metal bands tend to push toward technicality, Nachash embraces a raw, Old School ‘90s approach. This is largely thanks to the gritty, unpolished production, which steers clear of the overly polished, modern sound that often ruins the atmosphere.

With highlights like “Sojourner of the Dark Passage,” “The Scythewielder,” and “Empyrean Graves,” this is a solid Black/Death Metal album that flows effortlessly from start to finish.

I’m curious to see what the future holds for this trio—and whether we’ll have to wait another seven years for the next release.
